Arielle Chambers: The Power in Creating Your Own Narrative | LAW OF ATHLETE PODCAST
Taking advantage of the digital age and video chat capabilities, the hosts sit down for a virtual interview with Arielle Chambers. Tykera starts off Arielle’s introduction by saying she is her mentor, in charge of HighlightHer, powered by Bleacher Report, and overall, an amazing personality in the sports journalist world. Noting Arielle’s personality, Tykera says that is has probably helped propel her career and also makes her the perfect person to speak on Law #8: Your Character Can Take You Places Your Talent Can’t.
Getting into the conversation, another familiar connection is made. Both Deonte and Arielle are NC State Alumni. Go Wolfpack, right? Throwing up the “Wolf” hand sign, Ced claims that it is a llama and not a wolf. Who asked him? To get back on Arielle’s good side, Ced asks her the first question about the name change of HighlightHer. Arielle says she was creating content on her own when presented with the opportunity to run the platform. Not really connecting with its original name, she came up with HighlightHer, saying it was a play on words and a connection to the umbrella brand. She says that the name change took the platform to the next level.
After proving that HighlightHer as a platform deserved more of an investment, Arielle was given the clear to bring on a team to assist with her and the vision. She says that she has always been heavily basketball focused, but this platform has allowed her to explore many different sports and then broadcast their stories so that others are aware too. Deonte asks about how she approaches her posting strategy, with or without a team to help her. She says that she approaches it in a manner where she provides content based on what she would want to see as a woman and with different perspectives in mind. Understanding that some things will work, and some won’t, Arielle says there is some trial and error to finding the perfect strategy.
Arielle started off as a freelancer and she took it upon herself to build a name for herself in the physical and social space. She says her mission has been to tell stories and amplify the voices of the players. So, when there is a way to get the story, she will make sure she does what is needed. Arielle says it's unique how Tykera works for the WNBA’s social and that was once a position she applied for. Per the organization, she just wasn’t the fit based on how Arielle wanted to tell stories. Soon after, she had her pivotal moment in her career where she realized that her way of storytelling was creating her own mold for the industry.
Reiterating that she had to work for her platform, Arielle says that it's attainable for everyone. As long as you are passionate and you know what you're talking about, you can create the same opportunities for yourself as she did. It won’t be easy though; she says it is a constant grind and nothing short of hard work --but very possible. Wrapping up the show, the hosts suggest a part two knowing they only scratched the surface of the amazing things Arielle has accomplished and will do so as well. Arielle says she could “keekee” with the hosts all day, so her time on the podcast was well spent.
