Brandon Marshall: The Importance of Mental Health Awareness l LAW OF ATHLETE PODCAST
In Episode 9, your favorite three hosts of the Law of Athlete Podcast sit down with Brandon Marshall, former NFL player and founder of the I am Athlete Podcast and House of Athlete. The conversation starts off with discussing his podcast and Tykera mentions the often intense dynamic between him and one of his co-hosts. Tykera digs deeper in that dynamic which Brandon described as “locker room talk” and Brandon expresses how this form of banter used to be uncomfortable at the start of his career however, he quickly shifted his mindset to ensure he is in control of his reaction. When things get too heated, “Bro, are you okay” is the mindset shift that allows Brandon to ensure situations aren’t escalated, but discussed and he shares the positive impact that has had on his mental health.
Deonte asks Brandon when mental health first became a priority and that question takes Brandon back to his time playing in the little league, or in the park with his dad running tires at the age of six. Although that was when mental health first became a factor in his life, Brandon shares with the host a turning moment in his life when mental health took a whole new meaning; when he was diagnosed with Borderline Personality Disorder in 2011. “That was the first time I realized I was more than a football player” Brandon shares and that is how he turned impairment to performance by prioritizing his physical and mental health.
Brandon takes us through the pillars of health that are the foundation of his brand House of Athlete: Train, Fuel, Mental Fitness, Recover, and Tribe. He emphasizes mental fitness as being a critical factor to one’s overall wellbeing and Ced starts the discussion about seeking out for help. Brandon recognizes the importance of seeking help and having open discussions. Tykera expresses how it is difficult when there doesn’t seem to be the right words to say and Brandon shares that it is not our duty to always fix, but to listen.
In keeping with the theme of seeking help and the importance of communication when it comes to mental health, Ced recalls a time not too long ago when Deonte didn’t seem like his usual self. Ced and Tykera were in agreement of the importance of checking in but were transparent in sharing that oftentimes, like the situation with Deonte, they don’t. Although there is no malintention and oftentimes not speaking up is simply due to the assumption of a person just needing their space, everyone agreed that it is important to speak up regardless and make sure the person is okay.
Deonte goes into depth about that situation and his own mental health battles growing up and how things that have gone unaddressed have bottled up and can come to surface before you even realize it. The hosts and Brandon Marshall share transparent and honest dialogue empowering each other and those listening to be intentional about prioritizing mental health; recognizing there are several ways in which one can address it: self reflection and communication.
Overall, the hosts and Brandon shared an open and honest discussion regarding a topic that isn’t ever discussed enough. However, everyone shed light on why it is something that needs to be prioritized. And That’s Law.
