Kaila Charles: Social Activism From Within WNBA Bubble | LAW OF ATHLETE PODCAST

Sitting down with the hosts in episode 8, Kaila Charles, WNBA player for the Connecticut Sun, spends a little of her free time on set before she reports back to training camp before the 25th season tip off of the WNBA. Coming off of her rookie season in the league, she recaps her first year and the experience in the “bubble.” Even though she is now in the same room as her idols, she notes that she realized that she is supposed to be there with them.

Kaila is someone that was looking towards the future, utilizing every chance she got to play to prepare her for her basketball career. She says that she used the competition to make her a better player. Deonte in his truest fashion says that she needs to be challenged, because the games she was playing in high school were not like that. Looking at the set there are 3 basketball players against 1 non basketball player. He claims they are about to gang up on his “skills” and attempts to shut them down. Kaila says she asks him to play her, and he is scared. Case closed.

Continuing on with actual facts, she speaks on what the transition from public to private high school is like, always trying to get better and improve her stats. Kaila says that she ignored the doubters and did what was necessary to prepare her for Maryland. She openly admits that Maryland wasn’t her first choice but acknowledges that it was one of her best decisions she could have ever made. Looking back at her experience in college, she claims that it spoiled her with the access to her family’s support compared to playing overseas and in the bubble.

Ced questions Kaila about some of her most memorable games and out of the story she brings up that she was averaging 18 her freshman year. Normal peanut gallery commentary begins about how Deonte believes him and Ced could take her and Ced, a wise man says leave me out of it. Trying to get ahead to stories about the bubble, Kaila continues to share about some of the games that will forever be ingrained in her own personal history bank. Outside of the court, Kaila says that one of the biggest lessons she left college with was that she should always be comfortable with being uncomfortable. She makes sure that she is always challenging herself to get better every single day.

Stepping into the league, there was definitely some culture shock to be expected. Kaila understood that she had the skill to be there, but she knew that if she didn’t learn the league and get the right mentality for it, she couldn’t be successful. Even with her rookie year being different because of the pandemic, she said it gave her rookie year a whole new meaning and perspective. It allowed her to take necessary time to herself and take things day by day. Her first year has prepared her for the upcoming season, the 25th season of the league. With this being a monumental season, Kaila says she’s excited to travel and actually be around fan energy, even with it being limited. To commemorate the season, the WNBA and Nike designed special edition jerseys for each team, which showed the women how special they truly are. Honestly, they deserve it. Ending on an inspirational note, she understands that she is a professional athlete, but also now in a position to use her platform to project change. A task she’s been challenged with and fully accepts. And That’s Law.
