The Era of Boxing | LAW OF ATHLETE PODCAST with Lamont Roach Jr & More
Lamont Roach Jr. joins the hosts for an energetic dialogue discussing all things boxing. Starting off in a nostalgic moment, Deonte reflects on his time training as a kid with Lamont. He admits that it was an unpleasant time and that he did cheat at times to make weight. Ced agrees that cheating to make weight isn’t uncommon. Being well versed in many sports isn’t something Lamont is unfamiliar with as he used to play football and basketball as well. He says that he decided to focus on boxing because he knew his anatomy wasn’t going to grant him much more weight. The hosts say they think he made the right decision to focus on boxing because he is a beast at his craft.
Of course, Deonte chimes in to say that he could knock-out Lamont and the comment is accompanied by laughter. Lamont does give Deonte his props saying that he trained with him one day with no restraints and he was able to keep up. He also noted that he’s seen other athletes attempt his training regime and they weren’t able to keep up. Giving compliments, he says what he saw in the gym was impressive for a football player.
Lamont reflects on his journey to becoming a professional boxer at 18 and the new pressures accompanied with it. Ced says that he obviously has been handling it well do to his growing success and he probably can attribute it to his support system. Lamont agrees and says that having his family support his goals and journey as a boxer has helped him, especially having his dad as his coach. Knowing that parent-child coaching scenarios can sometimes be a lot to handle, the hosts ask what it was like. Lamont says that he is thankful that he has had his father as a coach and how they’ve been able to maintain that father-son dynamic within their relationship. Having a similar experience with his own father being his coach, Deonte wishes there was a better dynamic. He says it takes a special pair because father and sons can’t always be the coach and coachee and leave that in that setting.
As the lively conversation gets ready to end, the hosts wonder what Lamont is listening to before he walks into the ring. He says that it depends on the music that he is listening to around the time of the fight, so it really depends. In the gym, Lamont says he has a good mix always going on, so what he’s listening to pre-fight is going to incorporate a little bit of his favorite artists and current listens. This topic transitions to favorite rappers in general. Everyone has their own personally curated top 3, with Drake being named quite a few times. To wrap things up, Deonte shows off the recently launched Law of Athlete definition hoodie, which is now available on lawofathlete.com.
