DJ Turner: Lessons to Blessings with NFL DRAFT PROSPECT | Law of Athlete Podcast

Your favorite three hosts catch up with NFL Draft Prospect DJ Turner, weeks before the 2021 Draft in the 7thepisode of the podcast. Nerves are definitely there, but DJ gets open and honest as he chats with the team about Law #12: Stay Focused.

Draft day isn’t just a day, it’s months of preparation in front of teams, coaches, and scouts trying to see what talent they are getting ready to pay millions of dollars to and essentially change their lives. DJ owns up to the anticipation of the day, because it’s literally written all over his body language. Deonte and Ced tell him it’s cool and to relax, they are just there to chop it up authentically.

Knowing that things are different currently because of the current climate, DJ talks about his journey to the draft and what he’s been focusing on. All of it he says they are new experiences that he has learned from. Getting deeper, he speaks on growing up in Maryland and how that shaped him as an athlete. Being no stranger to adversity, he says he’s developed a “can’t go like that” mentality, which means he’s going to find a way to make whatever he’s thrown work. Chiming in, Ced reiterates that “can’t go like that” is like that and it’s good to live by.

Host Deonte is no stranger to most of the guests, but this one is special. Having played with DJ in high school at DeMatha Catholic High School, he’s had the opportunity to see him grow into his talent. From high school to college, to now knocking on the door of the NFL DJ touches on that what he’s experienced has come full circle concerning politics because sports are a business.

Understanding that his opportunity is a blessing, DJ speaks on some past mistakes that he made in college. Some that could have cost him his scholarship and even more than that. Deonte acknowledges a similar mistake and they come to the agreement that it is important to learn from your mistakes and the importance of making sure to not let them define you. DJ gets candid and says his eyes were open because now it’s not just about him, but his son and girlfriend too.

Transitioning into fatherhood, DJ gets candid on finding out his girlfriend was pregnant, telling his mother, and the support from his teams and coaches. Blessed to be in a situation where both institutions he played at during her pregnancy, he says he’s thankful for the support as he entered fatherhood. enters showstopper, angel, little bundle of joy DJ’s girlfriend Deja and son join the last few minutes of the show, exuding the love they have as a family.

To wrap things up, Tykera asks DJ for any closing remarks and tells the audience to stay optimistic through any decision that you make. Keep fighting towards your goal.
