NIL and Transfer Portal: Who to blame? | LAW OF ATHLETE PODCAST

Transfer portal talk. Coach Bear Spence joins Deonte, Tykera and Ced on Episode 6 discussing the huge wave of entrants to the transfer portal. Do coaches have a say or are the players in their own way when they make the decision to enter? Digging deep into the issue this episode gets down and into Law #4: Utilize the System, Don’t Let the System Use You

Entering the Transfer Portal and it being a need is really only a case-by-case basis. Coach Spence says that sometimes the decision to enter the portal is based on cockiness and wanting to skip the process of waiting on your turn during your journey. Ced questions whose fault is it for the transfer portal being the go-to option now and Tykera thinks maybe fault isn’t the right word. There is an opportunity presented, but it might not be available for everyone and not all situations will end the same.

What it boils down to is money. The students who are looking for a better athletic journey or situation, they are looking for a chance to be seen and make it. Okay, money is the topic. There should be a way for students to profit off of their likeness, but how do they make that fair? Colleges are trying to make their money on the athletes and off of them, so they pick and choose who to invest in which also contributes to players making the decision to transfer.

Coach Spence notes on how coaches do have an influence on the decision to enter the portal based on the players benefits to the team, but it’s a business. Deonte touches on his own situation to showcase how in some situations they try to force the players to transfer and how there are different reasons as to why the tough decisions are made.

As a student, Coach Spence says it is important to understand that while you are there to play a sport, you must look at what the institute is offering you. He gets real and says whether you’re coming out of high school or transferring make sure that education is taken care of. Put some efforts into making the most of your collegiate experience. All hosts end on the note of weighing the pros and cons of each decision you may make in your career, especially in the transfer portal. As a Coach Spence reiterates that education is important, keep your higher power first honing in on Law #4: Utilize the System, Don’t Let the System Use You.
