Equity in Body Armor Sets Up Former Football Star’s Future | Law of Athlete Podcast

Troy Gloster sits down in the final episode of season one of the Law of Athlete Podcast. Getting some final nerves out, the hosts dive right into Troy and his attachment to Body Armor. Coming out of college he worked with Coca Cola and Body Armor presented him with the opportunity to work with the start-up. Being a huge follower of Kobe Bryant, knowing that he invested 6 million dollars into the brand, Troy felt he should jump on the opportunity. Troy took a chance on the start-up and became the 70th employee which included equity in the company.

Being that Body Armor is still a privately held company, investing in the brand right now is currently not possible. Troy says that with a potential sale in more shares of the company to Coca Cola, there could be international expansion. He says this sets the company up for great global growth because Kobe is still attached to the brand. This segways into Troy speaking about how his career at Body Armor provided him with a full circle moment. Growing up, he says Kobe Bryant was his favorite athlete and someone who he looked up to. Five months before his passing, Troy said he was blessed with the opportunity to meet him and that might not have otherwise happened had he not worked for the company. He also says had Kobe not made the investment in the startup company, he wouldn’t have had the confidence to leave Coca Cola and go work for them.

Ced reiterates that Troy grew up playing basketball but was easily able to transition into football. He says that further proves an earlier statement that basketball players can go play football, but football players cannot get on the court. Ced says, “especially you,” to Deonte, bringing up their younger days on the same AAU team. Troy agrees that basketball players usually can figure their way out on the field, but not the other way around. He says that during the off seasons he would go to the wreck center with the football team and be confused at what they were doing on the court. Deonte claims that are not him and that they all should give him some (if any) props.

Switching back to Body Armor, Deonte asks Troy what he thinks the collaborations with college athletes will look like since they will soon be able to profit off of their likeness. Troy says for any brand this will be a new concept and Body Armor specifically hasn’t really made their plan of attack yet. Knowing that the company already has some of the top athletes in various sports being affiliated with the brand, he says entering that sector of representation shouldn’t be a problem. Tykera offers herself as a model, which leads Troy to say that the brand has actually been branching out. Recently, they have collaborated with 7-time Grammy winner, Carrie Underwood. He says that partnerships like this open the brand up to a whole new consumer base. Troy explains how marketing plays a huge part in the success of the brand.

Troy gets candid and talks about his decision to not play football his senior year of college and how that set him up for his future. He said he understood that his football career wasn’t probably going to take him to the next level, so he decided to focus on life after college before graduation. Being able to focus on job fairs and networking events allowed him to secure his job with Coca Cola 6 months prior to graduation. Troy says that the extra time that he had allowed him to also accept an internship with the Pittsburgh Steelers. He says that with every decision he has made, he regrets none because they have set him up for the position he is in right now. Going forward he says that he truly enjoys the company he works for and looks forward to what is next for the brand.
