  • The Era of Boxing | LAW OF ATHLETE PODCAST with Lamont Roach Jr & More

The Era of Boxing | LAW OF ATHLETE PODCAST with Lamont Roach Jr & More

Lamont Roach Jr. joins the hosts for an energetic dialogue discussing all things boxing. Starting off in a nostalgic moment, Deonte reflects on his time training as a kid with Lamont. He admits that it was an unpleasant time and that he did cheat at times to make weight. Ced agrees that cheating to make weight isn’t uncommon. Being well versed in many sports isn’t something Lamont is unfamiliar with as he used to play football and basketball as well. He says that he decided to focus on boxing because he knew his anatomy wasn’t going to grant him much more weight. The hosts say they think he made the right decision to focus on boxing because he is a beast at his craft.

Of course, Deonte chimes in to say that he could knock-out Lamont and the comment is accompanied by laughter. Lamont does give Deonte his props saying that he trained with him one day with no restraints and he was able to keep up. He also noted that he’s seen other athletes attempt his training regime and they weren’t able to keep up. Giving compliments, he says what he saw in the gym was impressive for a football player.

Lamont reflects on his journey to becoming a professional boxer at 18 and the new pressures accompanied with it. Ced says that he obviously has been handling it well do to his growing success and he probably can attribute it to his support system. Lamont agrees and says that having his family support his goals and journey as a boxer has helped him, especially having his dad as his coach. Knowing that parent-child coaching scenarios can sometimes be a lot to handle, the hosts ask what it was like. Lamont says that he is thankful that he has had his father as a coach and how they’ve been able to maintain that father-son dynamic within their relationship. Having a similar experience with his own father being his coach, Deonte wishes there was a better dynamic. He says it takes a special pair because father and sons can’t always be the coach and coachee and leave that in that setting.

As the lively conversation gets ready to end, the hosts wonder what Lamont is listening to before he walks into the ring. He says that it depends on the music that he is listening to around the time of the fight, so it really depends. In the gym, Lamont says he has a good mix always going on, so what he’s listening to pre-fight is going to incorporate a little bit of his favorite artists and current listens. This topic transitions to favorite rappers in general. Everyone has their own personally curated top 3, with Drake being named quite a few times. To wrap things up, Deonte shows off the recently launched Law of Athlete definition hoodie, which is now available on lawofathlete.com.

  • Equity in Body Armor Sets Up Former Football Star’s Future | Law of Athlete Podcast

Equity in Body Armor Sets Up Former Football Star’s Future | Law of Athlete Podcast

Troy Gloster sits down in the final episode of season one of the Law of Athlete Podcast. Getting some final nerves out, the hosts dive right into Troy and his attachment to Body Armor. Coming out of college he worked with Coca Cola and Body Armor presented him with the opportunity to work with the start-up. Being a huge follower of Kobe Bryant, knowing that he invested 6 million dollars into the brand, Troy felt he should jump on the opportunity. Troy took a chance on the start-up and became the 70th employee which included equity in the company.

Being that Body Armor is still a privately held company, investing in the brand right now is currently not possible. Troy says that with a potential sale in more shares of the company to Coca Cola, there could be international expansion. He says this sets the company up for great global growth because Kobe is still attached to the brand. This segways into Troy speaking about how his career at Body Armor provided him with a full circle moment. Growing up, he says Kobe Bryant was his favorite athlete and someone who he looked up to. Five months before his passing, Troy said he was blessed with the opportunity to meet him and that might not have otherwise happened had he not worked for the company. He also says had Kobe not made the investment in the startup company, he wouldn’t have had the confidence to leave Coca Cola and go work for them.

Ced reiterates that Troy grew up playing basketball but was easily able to transition into football. He says that further proves an earlier statement that basketball players can go play football, but football players cannot get on the court. Ced says, “especially you,” to Deonte, bringing up their younger days on the same AAU team. Troy agrees that basketball players usually can figure their way out on the field, but not the other way around. He says that during the off seasons he would go to the wreck center with the football team and be confused at what they were doing on the court. Deonte claims that are not him and that they all should give him some (if any) props.

Switching back to Body Armor, Deonte asks Troy what he thinks the collaborations with college athletes will look like since they will soon be able to profit off of their likeness. Troy says for any brand this will be a new concept and Body Armor specifically hasn’t really made their plan of attack yet. Knowing that the company already has some of the top athletes in various sports being affiliated with the brand, he says entering that sector of representation shouldn’t be a problem. Tykera offers herself as a model, which leads Troy to say that the brand has actually been branching out. Recently, they have collaborated with 7-time Grammy winner, Carrie Underwood. He says that partnerships like this open the brand up to a whole new consumer base. Troy explains how marketing plays a huge part in the success of the brand.

Troy gets candid and talks about his decision to not play football his senior year of college and how that set him up for his future. He said he understood that his football career wasn’t probably going to take him to the next level, so he decided to focus on life after college before graduation. Being able to focus on job fairs and networking events allowed him to secure his job with Coca Cola 6 months prior to graduation. Troy says that the extra time that he had allowed him to also accept an internship with the Pittsburgh Steelers. He says that with every decision he has made, he regrets none because they have set him up for the position he is in right now. Going forward he says that he truly enjoys the company he works for and looks forward to what is next for the brand.

  • Arielle Chambers: The Power in Creating Your Own Narrative | LAW OF ATHLETE PODCAST

Arielle Chambers: The Power in Creating Your Own Narrative | LAW OF ATHLETE PODCAST

Taking advantage of the digital age and video chat capabilities, the hosts sit down for a virtual interview with Arielle Chambers. Tykera starts off Arielle’s introduction by saying she is her mentor, in charge of HighlightHer, powered by Bleacher Report, and overall, an amazing personality in the sports journalist world. Noting Arielle’s personality, Tykera says that is has probably helped propel her career and also makes her the perfect person to speak on Law #8: Your Character Can Take You Places Your Talent Can’t.

Getting into the conversation, another familiar connection is made. Both Deonte and Arielle are NC State Alumni. Go Wolfpack, right? Throwing up the “Wolf” hand sign, Ced claims that it is a llama and not a wolf. Who asked him? To get back on Arielle’s good side, Ced asks her the first question about the name change of HighlightHer. Arielle says she was creating content on her own when presented with the opportunity to run the platform. Not really connecting with its original name, she came up with HighlightHer, saying it was a play on words and a connection to the umbrella brand. She says that the name change took the platform to the next level.

After proving that HighlightHer as a platform deserved more of an investment, Arielle was given the clear to bring on a team to assist with her and the vision. She says that she has always been heavily basketball focused, but this platform has allowed her to explore many different sports and then broadcast their stories so that others are aware too. Deonte asks about how she approaches her posting strategy, with or without a team to help her. She says that she approaches it in a manner where she provides content based on what she would want to see as a woman and with different perspectives in mind. Understanding that some things will work, and some won’t, Arielle says there is some trial and error to finding the perfect strategy.

Arielle started off as a freelancer and she took it upon herself to build a name for herself in the physical and social space. She says her mission has been to tell stories and amplify the voices of the players. So, when there is a way to get the story, she will make sure she does what is needed. Arielle says it's unique how Tykera works for the WNBA’s social and that was once a position she applied for. Per the organization, she just wasn’t the fit based on how Arielle wanted to tell stories. Soon after, she had her pivotal moment in her career where she realized that her way of storytelling was creating her own mold for the industry.

Reiterating that she had to work for her platform, Arielle says that it's attainable for everyone. As long as you are passionate and you know what you're talking about, you can create the same opportunities for yourself as she did. It won’t be easy though; she says it is a constant grind and nothing short of hard work --but very possible. Wrapping up the show, the hosts suggest a part two knowing they only scratched the surface of the amazing things Arielle has accomplished and will do so as well. Arielle says she could “keekee” with the hosts all day, so her time on the podcast was well spent.

  • Pro Athlete Turned Comedian: Who Lou? No HewLew | LAW OF ATHLETE PODCAST

Pro Athlete Turned Comedian: Who Lou? No HewLew | LAW OF ATHLETE PODCAST

Lou Young joins the hosts on Episode 10 for a candid conversation about his life on and the field and expounds on what finding his passion outside of the game means to him.

Getting right into things… Remember the Titans? Everyone does but Deonte. After explaining the importance of the classic film, the convo shifts to Lou’s attire. Giving a little background on his siblings, he said he decided to take what was familiar to him and make funny content from it. Not only does his upcoming merch and phrase “Hew Lew” have a huge following, but Lou says some very popular streaming services lowkey owe him a check. Regardless, if that ever happens, he says that God has him on the back end.

Growing up Lou says he always impersonated people, not knowing one day it would put him in the current position he is in. Continuing to speak on his new experiences in content creation, he mentions that he gets his creativity from reflecting on real life and relatable scenarios. Being that Denzel is his favorite actor, he drew to him when creating his earlier content. Quoting one of his favorite scenes from ‘Training Day,’ he acknowledges that sometimes he laughs to get through his pain, which sheds light to being able to deal with your emotions any possible way.

Switching gears to Lou’s football career, Tykera wants to dive into his story and the perseverance of it all. Lou has had an interesting career and in that has had many successes with a few setbacks. He says that he dealt with everything that came his way by learning to preserve early on in college. Fighting through injuries and adversity, he said he wanted to first correct his character before he graduated from college. Lou says he knew he was making a lot of mistakes and wanted to make sure that that cycle stopped before he left Georgia Tech.

Looking back on his childhood, he straight up says that he was a bad kid at times. Everything that he experienced growing up, he says contributed to him and his humbleness present day. Deonte mentions that he can definitely tell there were people in his life that wanted to make sure they got him on the right track. Lou agrees and says that had it not been for certain individuals stepping in, his life could be completely different. It in fact takes a village to raise a child.

Deonte dives into mental health and coping mechanisms, asking if comedy eases Lou’s pain. Lou says that in his football career, a pivotal moment in his life was when his brother’s life was taken. He says in order to stay clear mentally, comedy is his outlet. Mental health is important, so it was important for him to find a way to get through his pain. Cracking a few jokes, Tykera says, might be what some people need to get past the painful moments that he or anyone else may experience.

Wanting to see the depths of the comedian’s library, the hosts engage him in a game of “One Gotta Go.” Starting the round off, Lou says that Richard Pyror and Eddie Murphy top anything that Mike Epps has done off the strength of their ability to do multiple impressions in scenes alone. ‘Barbershop’ and ‘All About the Benjamins’ had to go, while ‘Life’ stayed. All agreed that Life is a classic simply based on the heavy hitting cast.

Wrapping things up, Lou says that what he is doing now with his content and comedy is to make sure that his daughter is set up for life and taken care of. In his true hilarious fashion, Lou makes one final strut showing off his “Hew Lew” gear, making sure the camera got all of his good angles. He says he appreciates the conversation and that the hosts have something special going on with the podcast.

  • Brandon Marshall: The Importance of Mental Health Awareness l LAW OF ATHLETE PODCAST

Brandon Marshall: The Importance of Mental Health Awareness l LAW OF ATHLETE PODCAST

In Episode 9, your favorite three hosts of the Law of Athlete Podcast sit down with Brandon Marshall, former NFL player and founder of the I am Athlete Podcast and House of Athlete. The conversation starts off with discussing his podcast and Tykera mentions the often intense dynamic between him and one of his co-hosts. Tykera digs deeper in that dynamic which Brandon described as “locker room talk” and Brandon expresses how this form of banter used to be uncomfortable at the start of his career however, he quickly shifted his mindset to ensure he is in control of his reaction. When things get too heated, “Bro, are you okay” is the mindset shift that allows Brandon to ensure situations aren’t escalated, but discussed and he shares the positive impact that has had on his mental health.

Deonte asks Brandon when mental health first became a priority and that question takes Brandon back to his time playing in the little league, or in the park with his dad running tires at the age of six. Although that was when mental health first became a factor in his life, Brandon shares with the host a turning moment in his life when mental health took a whole new meaning; when he was diagnosed with Borderline Personality Disorder in 2011. “That was the first time I realized I was more than a football player” Brandon shares and that is how he turned impairment to performance by prioritizing his physical and mental health.

Brandon takes us through the pillars of health that are the foundation of his brand House of Athlete: Train, Fuel, Mental Fitness, Recover, and Tribe. He emphasizes mental fitness as being a critical factor to one’s overall wellbeing and Ced starts the discussion about seeking out for help. Brandon recognizes the importance of seeking help and having open discussions. Tykera expresses how it is difficult when there doesn’t seem to be the right words to say and Brandon shares that it is not our duty to always fix, but to listen.

In keeping with the theme of seeking help and the importance of communication when it comes to mental health, Ced recalls a time not too long ago when Deonte didn’t seem like his usual self. Ced and Tykera were in agreement of the importance of checking in but were transparent in sharing that oftentimes, like the situation with Deonte, they don’t. Although there is no malintention and oftentimes not speaking up is simply due to the assumption of a person just needing their space, everyone agreed that it is important to speak up regardless and make sure the person is okay.

Deonte goes into depth about that situation and his own mental health battles growing up and how things that have gone unaddressed have bottled up and can come to surface before you even realize it. The hosts and Brandon Marshall share transparent and honest dialogue empowering each other and those listening to be intentional about prioritizing mental health; recognizing there are several ways in which one can address it: self reflection and communication.

Overall, the hosts and Brandon shared an open and honest discussion regarding a topic that isn’t ever discussed enough. However, everyone shed light on why it is something that needs to be prioritized. And That’s Law.

  • Kaila Charles: Social Activism From Within WNBA Bubble | LAW OF ATHLETE PODCAST

Kaila Charles: Social Activism From Within WNBA Bubble | LAW OF ATHLETE PODCAST

Sitting down with the hosts in episode 8, Kaila Charles, WNBA player for the Connecticut Sun, spends a little of her free time on set before she reports back to training camp before the 25th season tip off of the WNBA. Coming off of her rookie season in the league, she recaps her first year and the experience in the “bubble.” Even though she is now in the same room as her idols, she notes that she realized that she is supposed to be there with them.

Kaila is someone that was looking towards the future, utilizing every chance she got to play to prepare her for her basketball career. She says that she used the competition to make her a better player. Deonte in his truest fashion says that she needs to be challenged, because the games she was playing in high school were not like that. Looking at the set there are 3 basketball players against 1 non basketball player. He claims they are about to gang up on his “skills” and attempts to shut them down. Kaila says she asks him to play her, and he is scared. Case closed.

Continuing on with actual facts, she speaks on what the transition from public to private high school is like, always trying to get better and improve her stats. Kaila says that she ignored the doubters and did what was necessary to prepare her for Maryland. She openly admits that Maryland wasn’t her first choice but acknowledges that it was one of her best decisions she could have ever made. Looking back at her experience in college, she claims that it spoiled her with the access to her family’s support compared to playing overseas and in the bubble.

Ced questions Kaila about some of her most memorable games and out of the story she brings up that she was averaging 18 her freshman year. Normal peanut gallery commentary begins about how Deonte believes him and Ced could take her and Ced, a wise man says leave me out of it. Trying to get ahead to stories about the bubble, Kaila continues to share about some of the games that will forever be ingrained in her own personal history bank. Outside of the court, Kaila says that one of the biggest lessons she left college with was that she should always be comfortable with being uncomfortable. She makes sure that she is always challenging herself to get better every single day.

Stepping into the league, there was definitely some culture shock to be expected. Kaila understood that she had the skill to be there, but she knew that if she didn’t learn the league and get the right mentality for it, she couldn’t be successful. Even with her rookie year being different because of the pandemic, she said it gave her rookie year a whole new meaning and perspective. It allowed her to take necessary time to herself and take things day by day. Her first year has prepared her for the upcoming season, the 25th season of the league. With this being a monumental season, Kaila says she’s excited to travel and actually be around fan energy, even with it being limited. To commemorate the season, the WNBA and Nike designed special edition jerseys for each team, which showed the women how special they truly are. Honestly, they deserve it. Ending on an inspirational note, she understands that she is a professional athlete, but also now in a position to use her platform to project change. A task she’s been challenged with and fully accepts. And That’s Law.

DJ Turner: Lessons to Blessings with NFL DRAFT PROSPECT | Law of Athlete Podcast

All of it he says they are new experiences that he has learned from. Getting deeper, he speaks on growing up in Maryland and how that shaped him as an athlete. Chiming in, Ced reiterates that “can’t go like that” is like that and it’s good to live by.

Host Deonte is no stranger to most of the guests, but this one is special. • NIL and Transfer Portal: Who to blame? | LAW OF ATHLETE PODCAST

NIL and Transfer Portal: Who to blame? | LAW OF ATHLETE PODCAST

Transfer portal talk. Coach Bear Spence joins Deonte, Tykera and Ced on Episode 6 discussing the huge wave of entrants to the transfer portal. Do coaches have a say or are the players in their own way when they make the decision to enter? Digging deep into the issue this episode gets down and into Law #4: Utilize the System, Don’t Let the System Use You

Entering the Transfer Portal and it being a need is really only a case-by-case basis. Coach Spence says that sometimes the decision to enter the portal is based on cockiness and wanting to skip the process of waiting on your turn during your journey. Ced questions whose fault is it for the transfer portal being the go-to option now and Tykera thinks maybe fault isn’t the right word. There is an opportunity presented, but it might not be available for everyone and not all situations will end the same.

What it boils down to is money. The students who are looking for a better athletic journey or situation, they are looking for a chance to be seen and make it. Okay, money is the topic. There should be a way for students to profit off of their likeness, but how do they make that fair? Colleges are trying to make their money on the athletes and off of them, so they pick and choose who to invest in which also contributes to players making the decision to transfer.

Coach Spence notes on how coaches do have an influence on the decision to enter the portal based on the players benefits to the team, but it’s a business. Deonte touches on his own situation to showcase how in some situations they try to force the players to transfer and how there are different reasons as to why the tough decisions are made.

As a student, Coach Spence says it is important to understand that while you are there to play a sport, you must look at what the institute is offering you. He gets real and says whether you’re coming out of high school or transferring make sure that education is taken care of. Put some efforts into making the most of your collegiate experience. All hosts end on the note of weighing the pros and cons of each decision you may make in your career, especially in the transfer portal. As a Coach Spence reiterates that education is important, keep your higher power first honing in on Law #4: Utilize the System, Don’t Let the System Use You.

  • Unnoticed to Celebrated: HBCU Grad Changing the Narrative | LAW OF ATHLETE PODCAST with Ryan Smith

Unnoticed to Celebrated: HBCU Grad Changing the Narrative | LAW OF ATHLETE PODCAST with Ryan Smith

What’s something that you rarely see in the same sentence? Super Bowl champ and HBCU Graduate. In Episode 5, Deonte, Tykera and Ced sit down with Super winning champion Ryan Smith and hear about his journey to the NFL and what Law #7: Stay Ready So You Don’t Have to Get Ready means to him.

Jumping straight into a lively conversation, Ryan comes ready for what the hosts have in store for him. No worries, the hosts were ready, just the normal foolishness from your favorite host Deonte. After a little black fraternity banter and lesson sharing, they get into Law #7. Understanding that there is a need to be ready for any opportunity that may come your way, so always be prepared.

Making it from an HBCU to the NFL is not the norm, let’s be realistic. So, for Ryan he showed that he was ready for any opportunity that came his way. As an athletic high schooler, he focused on basketball with only one year of football to show scouts. Everyone is thinking the same thing, how does one year of high school football equal an NFL champ? When offers came around things didn’t necessarily go his way, he stayed patient and eventually his football career took off at North Carolina Central University.

Being that his career was a unique one full of setbacks, Ryan said that he almost gave up on football and knew that he had to take obtaining his degree seriously. Friendly banter breaks out on the topic of plans and networking. As an athlete, you are seen as a part of the school’s business and if you detour from your athletic goals in college, it may not come across the best way. But shouldn’t athletes have a safe space to discuss the “what if’s” if sports aren’t in the future?

Relationships. Building relationships is very important and Tykera is very transparent saying going into college she wasn’t the best at building them, Ced agrees it is a learning process. Opening up to new connections prepared the hosts and Ryan to always be aware of what’s before them to excel them in life. Tagging along, Deonte and Ryan speak on their relationships built from their fraternal organizations, Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. and Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. respectively and the benefits of being in them. The relationships you build in school, will help you outside further in life.

Ryan is as humble as they come, even as a Superbowl Champion. He speaks on being on the same team as what some call the football goat, Tom Brady was like and his influence as a teammate. Brady’s work ethic stood out to Ryan and inspired him to want to do more. As a teammate, he saw the leadership that Brady possessed to put the pieces of the team together and eventually take it all the way. Ryan says even though people want to be where he’s at, he’s continuously trying to improve to get the level of the greats, like his teammate Tom Brady.

Playing football has prepared Ryan for life by understanding that you have to balance life. After another round of rapid (rather slow) fire questions, Ryan struggles with his choice of chicken sandwich. Switching up, Ryan fires back at the hosts asking no hair maintenance or un-fresh breath. What would you choose? From his time in college to making it to the pros, the journey hasn’t been an easy one, but he has always been ready for what’s next, encompassing Law #7: Stay Ready So You Don’t Have to Get Ready.

  • Bradley Chubb: Minor Setbacks & Major Comebacks | LAW OF ATHLETE PODCAST with Deonte Holden & More

Bradley Chubb: Minor Setbacks & Major Comebacks | LAW OF ATHLETE PODCAST with Deonte Holden & More

A really familiar face joins the hosts on Episode 4 with guest Bradley Chubb, former collegiate teammate to host Deonte. Along with the familiar face, Ced McFadden joins the show as a co-host. Bradley or “Chubb” to most is no stranger to adversity. He sits down and gets real with Law #5: Never Let a Setback Keep You from Coming Back

This man really must be something special for his agency to gift him the username astronaut on Instagram by paying another user for it. And that he is. With an impressive football background with his father and brother both playing football at major levels, little Chubb was going to make a name for himself. Going into his junior year of high school, he suffered an ACL injury and he thought at 16 his football career was over. This was not the case. After a premature offer his junior year, he decided on NC State his senior year, actually committing the same day as Deonte.

After a position change and refocusing his freshman year, Chubb found his place on the team and set himself to become a First-Round Draft Pick. He touches on the honor it is to get to the combine alone but makes it clear that it’s worth it because they want to see the type of player you are and could be. As a projected first rounder, he was able to experience Draft Day in person, unlike players currently. Drafted as the 5th pick, Chubb was off to Denver to start his rookie year.

Pressured by outside critics, Chubb had to realize that he was only in his rookie year, so he knew that the first few games of his season shouldn't define his career. Having injuries in the past, Chubb was dedicated to proving his worth to the team his second year. 7 years and 7 days apart from his first ACL tear, during a game he tore his ACL again. What’s crazy is his scars made a 7 but reminded him that this was just another setback that he intended to come back from.

After reminiscing on collegiate days, from him breaking a school sack record by half of a sack and bowl games, the two Deonte and Chubb definitely show the bond is real. Switching gears from football, Deonte speaks on Chubb’s character and how regardless of his skills on the field it will take him so many places. As a hobby, Chubb has an interest in photography and real estate, but his main passion outside of football currently is the Chubb Foundation. Within his foundation he is working with kids from where he grew up in different ways through football and creativity.

For the future, Chubb looks to make sure that his family and future family are good and of course to be a Hall of Famer. The hosts chime in to make sure that even on his journey to the HOF that he keeps his tradition of taking towels, not from the locker room, but the opposing players. Yes, there’s a video of it. From ACL tears to critics in his ear, Chubb shows the true meaning of Law #5: Never Let a Setback Keep You from Coming Back.

  • The First Black Female Coach In The NFL | LAW OF ATHLETE PODCAST with Jennifer King & More

The First Black Female Coach In The NFL | LAW OF ATHLETE PODCAST with Jennifer King & More

Coming up on Episode 3, the podcast has another heavy hitter. A history maker. Jennifer King, the first black female coach in the NFL. She sits down with Deonte and Tykera to show how her breaking barriers encompasses Law #6: Become a Student of the Game.

Since being a young girl, Jennifer says she’s always been busy and because of this, it put her in a lot of places and around a lot of people. From coaching a local college to interning for the Carolina Panthers, Jennifer put herself in places to see and make the most of her time. Deonte asks the question, that everyone probably wants to ask, how did you do it? Jennifer simply replies, “Balance.”

Becoming a student of the game for Jennifer means she used to play the sport, then coached it, as well as now she serves as a coach in the NFL, coaching some of the world’s greatest football players. The hosts ask how was the transition from just being on staff to becoming an actual coach? She said they were cool with no blow back from coaches or players because of her gender. At the professional level, she learns that if you’re in the business of helping them be better, they will accept the help. Tykera brings up misconceptions about women and the game of football. Jennifer says as long as the people in the building are good with her, she's good. So, twitter trolls are non-existent to her.

To get into football coaching, especially at a major level, you have to seek out the opportunities and then take advantage of them and this is what Jennifer did. Through her attendance at a program, she met Coach Rivera and networked her way to the NFL along with her own personal football resume and stats. Not only does she coach, but she even played for the D.C. Divas. A force. She left coaching basketball to go after something she wanted –coaching football, no matter the level she would be at in the new role.

Flashback. Jennifer used to serve in law enforcement as a police officer. Okay, she’s done it all. Deonte asks her about the tough conversations that she may have had to have in today’s racial climate. She explains that it is not all pro police but understanding how they are trained and how they react. She remains levelheaded in and out of her experiences as a cop. Tykera adds in that while things may happen, it is important that they continue to be addressed at higher levels.

“You’re gonna be in a book!” Jennifer loves history and says it’s still setting in that her name is going to be amongst those of black women making firsts. Ever since the promotion and announcement the response to her history making moment has encouraged other women and girls to go after their similar dreams. Black women have always been told to be twice as good, so not only in this job does she have to go in with confidence, but any room she steps in.

Ending on a fun note, which one needs to go? Fried chicken, macaroni, or yams? Jennifer says fried chicken has to go and Deonte agrees saying fried food isn’t even that good for you. After a few more questions, they end it with Lebron or MJ, and Jennifer chooses MJ based on how she grew up. Then the talkative Deonte, puts his two cents in on her decision. Yes, her decision. Overall, we can take away from this that Jennifer shows that she is doing what it takes to make sure she’s continuously learning as she moves through the NFL sidelines as the first black female coach and staying true to Law #6: Become A Student of the Game.

  • Chloe Jackson: Basketball, Faith, and Fashion | LAW OF ATHLETE PODCAST

Chloe Jackson: Basketball, Faith, and Fashion | LAW OF ATHLETE PODCAST

What would YOU call fashion? In Episode 2, the most stylish Chloe Jackson sits down with Deonte and Tykera to speak on her basketball journey and new career in fashion. Tackling Law #9: Find Your Purpose Outside of Your Sport, they talk to an example who has done just that.

Not even warmed up, the football player (you figure it out) begins with his usual nonsense by talking to two former basketball players and saying he has a legit crossover that’s better than Chloe’s. Wasn’t she in the WNBA? Thankfully Tykera steps in to bring the football player (you figure it out) back to reality. Now, they’re on topic. Chloe is on set, looking like the drip god she is and the three reminisce on meeting each other in high school and Tykera points out Chloe has been in the fashion game since forever. This isn’t new to her.

As a collegiate student athlete, she transferred to 3 different schools, ending at Baylor which is where she really shined. Her decisions to transfer came from an early career injury and evaluating each program to see where she could fit in. Her collegiate years came to an end, and she immediately went into the WNBA as a player for the Chicago Sky. Disclaimer the host coughing did not have the coronavirus, he just choked on his drink. Maybe leave the basketball junk talking to the ballers.

After being released from the team due to an injury, Chloe had to make a decision. She spent a year in Poland and made the decision to devote her time into fashion. Decision well made. Please look her up, Chloe has the dressing skills and flicks to stand by them. Her decisions are her own, but her parents are her support system, and they supported her every step in her journey that led her to becoming a personal stylist. Deonte chimes in to note that she has the right people in her corner to speak on her faith and help her realize her dreams outside of the game. He further speaks on being ready to always transition out of the sport and into life. It’s about having a backup plan –not because you don’t believe in yourself, but as Chloe says, “the ball does eventually stop dribbling.”

Get good socks? Yeah, fashion is even down to the socks, like the Gucci ones Tykera came in wearing during one of the first podcast meetings. Chloe breaks down fashion versus style. As a stylist she wants to bring out someone’s personality and make them more confident in what they're wearing. The celebrity personal stylist takes you through a day in the life. Let’s just say, busy. Dwayne Wade, Quinn Cook, Maria Taylor, are just a few heavy hitters that Chloe has had the pleasure of styling.

When you’re living in your purpose, things just fall into place. Tykera cosigns, while Deonte praises the statement and why wouldn’t they? She is really speaking, because she is walking in her purpose and trusting every step of the process. Chloe’s ending advice is to stay true to your journey and believe in your talent. Seems like the key to Law #9: Find Your Purpose Outside of Your Sport.

  • Jeezy Speaks On Building Wealth, Music, and Sports | LAW OF ATHLETE PODCAST

Jeezy Speaks On Building Wealth, Music, and Sports | LAW OF ATHLETE PODCAST

Episode 1. The Law of Athlete Podcast is now live with host Deonte Holden, Founder of Law of Athlete and Tykera Carter, sitting alongside him as the co-host of the podcast. Ready to let you know that this just isn’t another popup podcast, they come out of the gate swinging on the very first episode with guest Jeezy. The Multi-platinum, Grammy Nominated Artist, Entrepreneur, and Philanthropist, “I am the street dream!” man himself --yes, Jeezy. It’s no secret the influence this man has, so that’s why he was the perfect guest for the very first episode to tackle Law #3: Be A Positive Influence.

Now let’s make the connection… Jeezy? Yeah, so again this man does it all. As owner of the Sports99 Agency, he decided to take a chance on Deonte and his football career and sign him to the agency as he continues his athletic and professional goals even off the field in this stage of his life.

After the normal check ins, they get into what it takes to be a well-rounded individual with a positive mindset. You have to use your positive mindset to help you move forward in life. But wait, let’s congratulate Jeezy for his new album release, The Recession 2 in the middle of a pandemic, in the middle of what he says Black people are experiencing, a civil war. What doesn’t he do? Tykera brings up something Jeezy recently said about God having to sit him down. Going into detail, he says that when his body started to let him down, he had to take a step back and evaluate the things he was putting his energy into and make the right God-led decisions in order to fulfil his obligations to his career. Understanding his vocal gift, he notes that his biggest lesson is that you must also grow through your failure, be thankful for his gift and be the leader that he was called to be.

Switching gears, they get into the topic of investing in yourself. It begins with understanding that you need to start with yourself and put yourself in a position to where you can build. By building, you start to stack, build that generational wealth and now you’re in a position to help others and those around you. Investing in yourself + mindset + grind = success. Basically, you have to take what you know and make it work for you to elevate you in life. Build. That’s the goal.

Knowing Jeezy’s platform and his available resources, he knew it was time to begin to give back. Calling himself the modern day “Robin Hood” he makes sure that within everything else he has going on that he is always in a position to bless others, not only making it about philanthropy, but making it personal. Deonte wraps up the show by asking Jeezy what he wants his last impression and what he wants his legacy to be. He says he wants his actions to match with what he spoke about, that his honor is shown, and that his legacy was to be known as a stand up guy. When it’s all said and done, he wants people to know he stood for something. Living up to Law #3: Be A Positive Influence.
