Equity in Body Armor Sets Up Former Football Star’s Future

During this episode of the Law of Athlete Podcast, the hosts sat down with the impressive Troy Gloster, who shared his remarkable journey with the iconic sports drink brand, Body Armor. Troy started his career with Coca Cola but was presented with an opportunity to work with the start-up Body Armor, which he decided to take. As a huge fan of the legendary Kobe Bryant, who invested $6 million in the brand, Troy felt that he had to jump at the opportunity. He became the 70th employee and was also offered equity in the company. Although Body Armor is currently not available for public investment, Troy believes that with the potential sale of more shares to Coca Cola, the brand will soon expand globally.

Troy's career at Body Armor brought him full circle as a lifelong fan of Kobe Bryant, whom he had the privilege of meeting just five months before his tragic passing. Troy believes that he would not have had this opportunity had it not been for his job at Body Armor, and that Kobe's investment gave him the confidence to leave Coca Cola and join the start-up. The hosts then shifted the conversation to Troy's athletic career. Although he grew up playing basketball, Troy easily transitioned to football in high school, thanks to his family's strong football background. His older brother was an All American, and his grandfather was the first Black All American quarterback.

Troy worked hard and received multiple offers, just like his brother did. The topic of marketing for brands came up, and Troy emphasized the importance of collaborations and partnerships in expanding a brand's consumer base. He mentioned Body Armor's recent collaboration with 7-time Grammy winner Carrie Underwood and how it opened the brand up to a whole new audience.

The discussion then turned to false advertising, and the group shared their experiences with products that may or may not live up to their claims. Ced talked about a product that he uses and believes in, but his co-hosts were skeptical. The group also talked about the effects of coffee, and Troy admitted that he had never had a sip of coffee in his life. Troy also talked about his decision to not play football his senior year of college, which allowed him to focus on his future and secure a job with Coca Cola six months prior to graduation. He regrets none of his decisions and looks forward to what's next for the brand he loves.

Overall, Troy's story is a compelling one that demonstrates the importance of taking risks, following your passions, and making the most of every opportunity that comes your way. His journey with Body Armor is an inspiration to athletes and entrepreneurs alike, and his insights into marketing and branding are invaluable for anyone looking to build a successful business.
