HBCU Grad Ryan Smith Changes NFL Narrative
Episode 5 of the Law of Athlete podcast features an inspiring conversation with Super Bowl champion Ryan Smith, who is also a graduate of a Historically Black College, North Carolina Central University. The hosts, Deonte, Tykera, and Ced, sit down with Ryan to hear about his journey to the NFL and his thoughts on Law #7: Stay Ready So You Don’t Have to Get Ready.
Ryan's journey to the NFL was not a typical one. Despite having only one year of high school football experience, Ryan focused on basketball during his high school years. However, he stayed patient and eventually got his football career off the ground at North Carolina Central University. As an athlete, Ryan faced many setbacks, but he never gave up on his dream. He knew the importance of obtaining his degree and took it seriously.
Building relationships is very important and Tykera is very transparent saying going into college she wasn’t the best at building them, Ced agrees it is a learning process. Opening up to new connections prepared the hosts and Ryan to always be aware of what’s before them to excel them in life. Tagging along, Deonte and Ryan speak on their relationships built from their fraternal organizations, Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. and Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. respectively and the benefits of being in them. The relationships you build in school, will help you outside further in life.
Despite being a Super Bowl champion, Ryan remains humble and continuously strives to improve himself. He admires the work ethic and leadership of his teammate, Tom Brady, and looks up to him as an inspiration. Ryan's experience in football has taught him the importance of balancing life and always being prepared for whatever may come his way.
In the end, the hosts and Ryan engage in some lighthearted banter and fun questions, showcasing the camaraderie and friendship that have been built between them. Ryan's story serves as an inspiration to anyone who may face setbacks or challenges in achieving their dreams.
